Prospective Students

The Morgantown Institute of Religion is attended by young adults, both married and single, from all over the Clarksburg West Virginia stake. Many of us are located in Morgantown, but students come from Fairmont, Clarksburg, Buckhannon, and various other places in the region.

Where do we attend church?
The Morgantown University Ward is located in the same building as the Institute of Religion. (The Institute is on the first floor, and the church is on the second.) The building is conveniently located a five minute walk from the downtown campus of WVU and is also accessible by car and bus. Sacrament meeting begins at 10:00.

How many students attend institute?
This year, there were about forty students attending a variety of classes. Other LDS young adults attend the university ward but do not come to institute, including several young married couples.

What classes are available?
The classes vary each semester. During the Fall 2014 semester, we'll have classes on Doctrine and Covenants, Presidents of the Church, Church History, and a marriage class, in addition to Friday forum. A member of the stake presidency also teaches a weekly class at the nearby dental school.

How often do we have activities?
The institute plans activities several times each semester. In the past, some of our activities have been YSA dances, cookouts, information booths or "missionary booths" on the campus of WVU, a luau, several service projects, and an annual YSA conference. In addition, we have FHE each week, and our students frequently plan unofficial activities such as water gun fights, frisbee games, hiking, and everyone's favorite tradition -- half-price appetizers at Texas Roadhouse following Tuesday night institute classes. During the school year, students can regularly be found hanging out at the institute in between their classes.

Where is the nearest temple?
Our assigned temple is the Washington DC temple in Kensington, Maryland. Unfortunately, it does take between three and four hours to drive to the temple, but some of our members go at least once a month and are always willing to take others along. In addition, both the institute and the ward have temple trips several times a year. The long drive, time spent at the temple, and traditional post-temple dinner at Cafe Rio create great opportunities for members to bond.

Can I serve a mission while attending WVU?
Yes! Several of our students take time off to serve a mission each year. For more information about the process, email Heather, and she’ll get you in touch with one of our many Mountaineer RMs.
